Hi,

PaleMoon downloader does not install any portable launcher. I had to use one from an old version you made. Is this the expected behaviour?

Thanks for your hard work anyway.

Hi Bernat,

Thanks for all your efforts. I've been using your apps for years.

I get the error "Profile is still in use" when trying to restart Firefox after closing. It doesn't matter if I have exit FF properly or the hard way.

I've solved by creating a batch file that deletes the parent.lock file. Looks like this:
@echo off
del data\profile\parent.lock

Something you can consider implement in your launcher?

Bernat said...

I think you don't use the latest launcher.

parent.lock is no more deleted by by Firefox when leaving so I removed the check few month ago.

Thank you many, but I was wondering why the appz posted here all
need admin rights. I thought that files and registry files where
stored in a folder so you won't need full access to the host system,

For browsers it ads a security risk, or am I wrong?

Hi, Bernat. I suggest to make portable Firefox x64 based on XhmikosR`s build http://xhmikosr.1f0.de/firefox/ (it’s ordinary Firefox, just x64-compiled), because forks (Pale Moon or Waterfox) have some troubles always... I’m using XhmikosR`s Firefox with your Firefox launcher and translation from ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/16.0/win32/xpi/ (for Firefox 16.0) and
it works fine, but installer (like your Portable Pale Moon 15.x installer) would be better than manual replacement.

Quote: "if FirefoxPortable and ThunderbirdPortable folders are in the same folder. A click on a mailto link in FirefoxPortable open a new mail in ThunderbirdPortable"

- Does the opposite behavior works? For eg, if I click on a link in a mail in TB, does it open in FF portable? That would be really good.

- FF Portable 17.0B1 & B2 frozes with the last Flash 11.5.500.97beta. Is it also frozing with a non portable version? If no, what happens exactly?

- On Win8 & Win7 I pinned the FF & Portable icon on the taskbar. When I open it, it creates a new icon because I suppose the launcher is calling the the normal executable, so 2 different process.
Is it possible to get one simple icon for both? I know this happens for all the portable apps you have so as ppapps.com, but is there a trick I can use?

Thanks in advance for your help Bernat.

Bernat said...

- Yes, just try, working for me.

- Flash no more froze Firefox with latest launcher. Read sources lines 52-57 & 83-86

- firefox.exe is the child process of Firefox<portable.exe. I don't use icons in taskbar.

seiferflo said...

Thx for your reply.

- Not working for me. Tried to move to different folders. Is there any option in Thunderbird, in the about:config maybe, to define FFP as main browser?

- Good work, it's indeed not frozing anymore with your last launcher.

- Well I pined the Firefox Portable icon on the taskbar and when I click on it, it creates a new icon of firefox just next to it...

I have admin rights.
The folders are fine.
I still have 4 icons instead of 2 when FF & TB are running.
The ini configuration is also fine (I added FirefoxAssociate & ThunderbirdAssociate).
I still can't open links from Thunderbird and the mailto links from FireFox are opened by the windows mail metro from Win8.

Is it because I'm using Earlybird instead of Thunderbird? Also FF & TB have to different profile name in the ini file.

Sorry. Thank you for your help

seiferflo said...

Also (please add this comment to the previous one).
Firefox Portable is behaving weirdly regarding going up & down in page using the keyboard. For Eg if I press the arrow down to scroll down in the page, FF goes to the end. Home button doesn't do anything. End just moves me down of a few lines then go back to the top.
I don't have this issue with FF Portable from Lbk or Papps. Any idea please?

Bernat said...

"Is it because I'm using Earlybird instead of Thunderbird?"
Of course: Earlybird and Daily have no association to Firefox and this explain also why Firefox don't associate to Earlybird.

No problem for me to scroll with keyboard in Firefox (16.0.1).

seiferflo said...

AH sh.. I've been trying hundreds of tricks before I realize that.
No way on your side to make Earlybird associate with Firefox the same way TB does? Else I guess I'll have to downgrade.

Solved the keyboard problem, the "caret browsing mode" was activated.

Regarding the icons, do you have this issue? Please check the following screenshot:
Thanks again for your help

Thx again for the new version.
Do you know how to trick windows, most especially Outlook 2013 to open links in FF portable?

So far, I'm using a program called "Registry FF portable with default", which helps to make FF portable a default program in windows.
There are 2 behaviours:

1: I register Firefox Portable as default. Result: If I click any link including Outlook, it opens FF portable (provided it was not launched before, else I get the message "another Firefox is running").

2: Because I always have FF launched, I use method 2 which consist of fixing the method 1 message by registering the non portable exe as default.
If FF portable is not launched, any link opens the normal Firefox without my data. If FF portable is launched, it opens a new tab which is great, however, it is not working in Outlook 2013 (nothing happens).

I would like to fix the last one as I receive tons of links through Outlook and I often need to open my online account to open a link in FF portable.

Is there a way that you could trick your launcher to help me with that please?

Sorry for the long explanation and thanks in advance for your answer.

Bernat said...

1: To avoid "another Firefox is running" try AllowMultipleInstances=true in FirefoxPortable.ini.

2: Never launch directly main exe: you will lost settings or use command-line:
firefox.exe -profile "path_of_portable_profile"

On Windows 8 my ThunderbirdPortable no more open links in FirefoxPortable.
I right-click copy link and paste in FirefoxPortable address bar.

Hello Bernat! :-)

I am on WinVista Home Premium SP2 x86 and I downloaded the new version of your Fx Nightly portable installer @
http://rapidshare.com/files/3506003724/Nightly_Portable_MultiVersion_en-US_Online.exe

After I typed the version number 27.0a1, there followed no prompt about the OS architecture (x86 or x64) and the online installer downloaded by default the 64bit binaries...
It took me a while to figure out what was happening and why the portable launcher did not start the browser (in my 32bit OS) :-{
I eventually fixed this by downloading manually the win32 binaries from the Mozilla FTP and placing them inside App/Nightly folder, but can you please fix the portable installer itself?

Thanks for all your hard work, I do realise that bugs are bound to happen...

The "old" methods to set FirefoxPortable to be the default browser are no longer working for me.

Looking at the registry, it seems some entries might need the -profile (path) argument and some do not.

If I set all "openwith" settings to - profile (path), FirefoxPortablej knows it is set as the default but clicking on .url or .htm will complain.

Does anyone know how to set the "openwith" registry settings so FF 42 will be the default in all circumstances? If so, please share that information.

Hi Bernat,

After I update to version 67.0, when I click on a link from another application (for example a Thunderbird email) Firefox open a new windows and it uses a new profile (instead of my profile)
In previous versions it opened inside the already running Firefox Portable without any trouble.
Is there any workaround?

Thank you in advance!!

Bernat said...

This was not working on Windows 8 and above and now no more.
No solution, sorry.

Daniel Ulman said...

I think I found a workaround.
If I create a profile that has Firefox as the name (the default profile of the portable) and the path to the corresponding folder,
the behavior of the links of Thunderbird or the double click in an html file, is the expected one.
What I could not get for now is to create the profile by passing parameters during the start of Firefox.

hi bernat
in pale moon 28.7.0 x64 i cant open another pale moon even while "AllowMultipleInstances" is true.i want when open a .html file while pale moon is exist, that .html file open in new tab in existing pale moon. is it possible?
i already register pale moon launcher as default Browser by using "RegisterFirefoxPortable.exe" app from "Ramesh Srinivasan".
thanks

Replace PaleMoonPortable.exe (use AllowMultipleInstances=true in PaleMoonPortable.ini)

Rocksoccer said...

There seems to be some problem with AllowMultipleInstances=true.
If I click on a link in a different app to open a web page, it goes through FirefoxPortable.exe, but rather than opening the page inside the existing window, it creates a new window, and worse, it uses a different blank user profile.

Not quite sure whether that is related to the launcher or firefox.

"If I click on a link in a different app to open a web page" ?

Rocksoccer said...

I followed this to set FirefoxPortable as the default app for web browsing.
https://www.winhelponline.com/blog/register-firefox-portable-with-default-programs-in-vista/

For example, in Adobe PDF reader, if I click a http link, Windows will use FirefoxPortable to open the link. A few months ago, it used to open the link in a new tab of Firefox portable if it is already running. But recently, it started a new window in a new profile.

No change in FirefoxPortable.exe since more than 2 years.
Ask help here.

Just tried this one, https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable

Everything works fine.

Hi Bernat,

It is possible to pass parameters with FirefoxPortable.exe?
For example:

FirefoxPortable.exe -profile "/path/to/profile"

Thanks

Daniel

Bernat said...

Yes FirefoxPortable.exe pass parameters but this will not work for -profile parameter because it is yet used by launcher.
You can only change profile folder inside Data folder (default is Firefox) by editing FirefoxPortable.ini with:
User=MyPath\MySubPath

Therefore you can pass -profile parameter directly to firefox.exe inside App\Firefox*

Bernat said...

No, sorry.

Bernat said...

I don't know: I have always admin rights and can't reproduce your problem.
On the top of the page you can read: "On Vista and above turn off User Account Control (UAC) or run launcher as admin".

Bernat said...

You can try to run directly waterfox.exe with the level you want with switch:
-profile "D:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Data\Waterfox"
for instance.

Is there any way to change the language to Waterfox Current? It is only possible to run the US English version. Thank you!

Bernat said...

No, only Classic setup contains all languages:
Waterfox Classic 2020.07.2 Setup.exe: 71.16 MB
Waterfox Current 2020.07.2 Setup.exe: 47.70 MB

Hi all,
I have used your latest version 94.0.2 for firefox browser portable. However, today I got a newer version notice when I open firefox browser. It shows "Update to 94.0.2" button whereas I do use 94.0.2 version. Could you help to solve this issue? Thanks.

Bernat said...

Problem is on your side: only you can try to solve it.

I can't get the new Waterfox Classic (Classic 2022.01) to download. I'm getting setup.exe not found 404. I wonder if the download server may have changed. Any idea please?

Bernat said...

You are right the latest version available here is Classic 2021.10.
You can download WaterfoxClassic2022.01.exe on Github in same folder of installer and rename it in Waterfox Classic 2022.01 Setup.exe (tested working).

Did anyone try downgrading Nighly to the last "usuable" version?
In 109, they added dumb extension button and removed the ability to hide the regular extension buttons in overflow menu..
